After Surgery

IF YOU HAVE HAD ANY MOUTH SURGERY (EXTRACTIONS,
IMPLANTS, BIOPSIES, GUM SURGERY)
 
• Bite down on the gauze provided for half an hour. If bleeding persists, bite on a moist tea bag for half an hour. If you can’t stop the bleeding, call the office (705-445-0551) or, after hours, 24/7, call Dr. Somborac’s cell (705-441-4566).
• Do not eat or drink anything hot.
• To minimize the risk of a dry socket, do not rinse for the first few days. Do not smoke or spit. Swab with LISTERINE COOL MINT® which is an anti-bacterial rinse containing essential oils.
• Apply external cold pack, 10 minutes on, 10 minutes off, for a few hours.
• Only eat very soft foods or liquids (cooked vegetables and fruit, fruit juices, cooked cereals, milk, soft cheeses, soft boiled eggs, fish – see the final chapter of our award-winning book, YOUR MOUTH, YOUR HEALTH; STOP AND REVERSE AGING or Canada’s Food Guide available from us or online at: www.hc-sc.gc.ca/fn-an/food-guide-aliment/index-eng.php)
• Continue taking your medication (dexamethasone) as prescribed.
• Take Extra Strength Tylenol ® every 4 to 6 hours if you need it.
• Rest and relax – do not exert yourself.
• Call our office (705-445-0551) or Dr. Somborac’s cell (705-441-4566) at any time if you need help.
• If you have had upper teeth extracted or upper implants placed, do not blow through your mouth or nose, do not suck through a straw and if you have to sneeze, do so with your mouth wide open. If you must blow your nose, do so gently and one nostril at a time.
• Sutures will dissolve within 5 to 10 days.


 
ADDITIONALLY, IF YOU HAVE HAD IMPLANT SURGERY TO
STABILIZE DENTURES
 
During the first week
• Wear your denture for cosmetic reasons only.
• Clean around your implants with a cotton swab using LISTERINE COOL MINT® which is an anti-bacterial rinse containing essential oils.
• Keep your mouth as clean as possible the way we show you.
• Keep your denture as clean as possible the way we show you.
• Do not put pressure on your implants.
 
Warning
Do not apply tongue or lip pressure or any other kind of pressure to your implants.
 
Caution
You must load your implants GRADUALLY, after the first four months, with NO LOADING before that.
 
 
During the first four months
• You may use your denture for eating.
• Gradually increase the firmness of the food you eat.
 
After we connect your denture to your implants
• Gradually increase the firmness of the food you eat.
 
At all times
• Keep your mouth and your dentures as clean as possible.
• Keep your check-up schedule so that we can observe and maintain your results.
• If you need help call the office (705-445-0551) or Dr. Somborac’s cell
(705-441-4566) at any time.
• If you have had upper teeth extracted or upper implants placed, do not blow through your mouth or nose, do not suck through a straw and if you have to sneeze, do so with your mouth wide open. If you must blow your nose, do so one nostril at a time.

 
ADDITIONALLY, IF YOU HAVE HAD IMPLANT SUGERY TO REPLACE MISSING TEETH

IF YOU HAVE HAD SEDATION
 
• Rest and relax for the rest of the day.
• Do not operate a motor vehicle or other machinery.
• Do not drink alcohol for at least 18 hours after your appointment.
• Do not take any more sedative medication for at least 18 hours after your appointment.
